My tax number shows as invalid during the onboarding process

Whenever you enter a tax registration number, we validate it against a number of criteria including the format and external tax authority databases. Below are some common reasons why a tax number may show as invalid and what to do about it:


  • Norway: Stripe Tax does not yet support simplified VAT registrations in Norway (the so-called VOEC registration), therefore all VAT registrations appear as “standard”. The format of the VAT numbers differ between the two schemes and yours may show as invalid

  • Deregistration: Your tax number may have been deregistered by the tax authority. This can happen automatically in certain cases if, for example, you have had multiple periods of no activity. The tax number may have been deregistered by a previous tax agent (this sometimes happens if they withdraw their mandate with the tax authority).
