Why You Need an FEIN
Before your business can register for sales and use tax accounts in the United States, you must first obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) from the IRS. This is a mandatory requirement for all businesses operating in the U.S.
While Taxually does not provide FEIN registration services, we have created this comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process. We've included step-by-step instructions, helpful resources, and video tutorials to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Important Tips for Non-U.S. Entities
Responsible Party Requirements: The IRS requires you to identify a responsible party on your application. For non-U.S. entities, this person does not need to be a U.S. citizen or resident, but they must have authority over your business's financial decisions.
Accuracy is Critical: Carefully ensure that all business details on your FEIN application exactly match your incorporation documents. This includes your business name, address, and other identifying information. Any errors or inconsistencies will require corrections, which can significantly delay your ability to register for state sales and use tax accounts.
Processing Timeframes:
- Faxed Applications: Typically processed within 4 business days. However, faxed applications can occasionally be delayed or lost. If you haven't received your FEIN within one week, have a corporate officer call the IRS to follow up on your request.
- Mailed Applications: Allow 4-6 weeks for processing when submitting by mail.
